(composer, violist) In 2012 is the awarded
artist with "The Hannah S. and Samuel
A. Cohn Memorial Foundation Endowed Fellowship”.
Born in Porto, Portugal. He studied classical
viola at the Kaertner Landes Konservatorium
in Austria and Jazz at the New School for
Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York.
Currently doing his PHD at the University
of Coimbra at the Royal College for the
Arts. Among others we has worked with: Paquito
d’Rivera, Dave Douglas, Don Byron,
Hank Roberts, Jason Kao Hwang, Daniel Levin.
Honourably mention at the “Prémio
de Composição Lopes-Graça
2009” and winner of the competition
for artistic projects of “Serralves
em Festa! 2010”.
Founding member of the ACIES String Quartet,
of the trio “INCOMPLETO” with
actor Cláudio Da Silva and bass player
Sérgio Tavares, and creator of the
international collective/band EXPERIENCES
OF TODAY (EOT) produced by the Associação
Arte à Parte, with who he performed
in many festivals and recorded an album.
Significant concerts: Banff Summer Festival,
Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, 16ª
Bienal de Cerveira, Carnegie Hall (invited
soloist) e Union Square Park (SOLO Concert).
He usually collaborates in multidisciplinary
projects with, among others: painter António
Olaio, Architect Nuno Grande, Brazilian
sculpturist and video artist Chico Santos.
Resident artist at the Djerassi Residency
for Artists Program in 2012 in California.
José was the composer of the soundtrack
of the documentary “SAGRADO”
by Nuno Grande about the Sagrado Coração
de Jesus Church in Lisbon (created by the
architects Nuno Portas and Nuno Teotónio
